Players will lose their heroes time and again, as that's part of the gameplay loop. Their dynamics as a party dictates whether players can face the abyss, or succumb to it after so many futile attempts at winning an uphill battle. The main reason to pick up DLC's early is for sale pricing, but it's not like you won't see discounted pricing again at some later point, and the base game itself can keep you occupied for a long while by itself.In Darkest Dungeon, efficiency is the glue that holds the player's flimsy and meek heroes together. And Colour of Madness is nothing to care about early on. I actually currently like the ShieldBreaker now, but the SB also comes with an in-built questline of a sorts that can really screw up the rythym of base game. Keep in mind that DLC can be activated at any time, and even though the Crimson Court questline is a rough addition early game for someone that never played base before, you can still activate the new class (however nerfed) and Districts in advance of that. Is that something we should work at not holding againt him? ) Anyway, OP, I agree that the base game by itelf is the way to go, though I think that if you do like it, picking up the DLC's later adds not just a lot of story but a lot in the way of options as well. He helped Red Hook on the recent balance patch, and has now done official in-game artwork with the Color of Madness trinkets.
